Adults loved to talk to him, and the older kids loved to be around him. Wherever Brian was, a robust and mature analysis of baseball was happening, and Brian, age 9, was holding court. Brian was three years my younger, but when it came to discussing baseball, I looked to Brian as an elder.

C'mon, golf, how about some common sense?
There’s no questioning that golf is a unique sport, difficult to play and almost impossible to master.

To reach the very top of the game, a player must have the timing and brute strength of an MLB slugger blasting a fastball rows deep into the stadium’s upper deck, the deft touch an NFL quarterback throwing a fade to the corner of the endzone, the precision of an NHL right winger aiming for the slightest of openings around a goalie and the focus and mental toughness of an NBA guard stepping to the free throw line for two shots with his visiting team down one with less than a second left.

Iroquois citizens making healthier food choices
Among the healthiest areas? Iroquois County, where people are picking up foods with more healthy macronutrients, such as fiber, and fewer with unhealthy macronutrients, such as sugar.

There's a debate among economists and public health advocates about why some communities tend to eat so poorly. For years, advocates have argued it's largely a problem of access: Consumers eat junk because they can't afford healthy foods or find them in their communities.

I always look out for others, and this is another way for me to do that,” said “Brother” George Smith, owner of Brother George’s BBQ.

Brisket ... in the oven?
Now, I know what you grill guys are thinking: A brisket in the oven is lame, right? But is it? I brined it for five days, used my best dry rub and added a nice, smoky flavor with a few drops of liquid smoke. But best of all, the brisket came out so juicy and tender. And when the snow is flying and the temperatures plummet, it's nice to stay indoors.

At most schools, books are found inside students' lockers. But at Lincoln K-8 they've got books on the outside, too.

Childhood favorites like "Holes", "Harry Potter" and "Charlotte's Web" now line the hallway to the library. Students spent the school year painting the bank of outdated lockers with their favorite books to spruce up their at-school storage space.

The Professional Disc Golf Association (PGDA) membership has grown rapidly since 1999 and currently has nearly 31 thousand players. Disc golf is a game that has a very early history, and was formalized in the 1970’s. It is comparative to “ball golf,” where the player progresses through a course of “holes.” In the case of disk golf the holes are baskets that stand upright to be able to catch the disk. Players compete against other players for the lowest attempts into the hole.

Angelica Brack, 24, of Kankakee, has dreams of making hair styling her main profession, one day opening her own hair shop for all, and making it accessible for people with disabilities.

"A lot of times, women with disabilities will just get their hair cut because that's a quick and easy way rather than having a style," Brack said. The name of it would be called Angelic Designs.

There are a few well-known monster tales that most people have heard of: Frankenstein, Dracula and the Wolfman to name a few. Victor Hugo's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" also is a story about a monster, but not in the way most people suspect.

The Kankakee Valley Theatre Association's newest show of the same name opens this weekend at the Kankakee Junior High auditorium, and, as the lyrics clearly state, it is up to the audience to decide "what makes a monster and what makes a man." Based on the original novel with music from the animated Disney classic, the show perfectly captures the kind, caring nature of humanity in strict contrast with the cold, unfeeling "monster" of the story.

Why grazing can give you more energy
Why grazing can give you more energy
These days, grazing has evolved to become another facet of the healthy eating trend. The idea is that instead of eating three large meals, we should eat less and more often, consuming small amounts of food every couple of hours. Grazing, we are told, helps us to regulate our blood sugar and avoid energy slumps, as well as being better for our digestive systems.

MUSIC OF THE CIVIL WAR
MUSIC OF THE CIVIL WAR
IIn the 1850s, the decade leading up to the Civil War, music was heard and played everywhere in the country. Classical pieces, opera, dances, religious music, band music, and blackface minstrel songs permeated the culture. Parlor pianos everywhere rang out sentimental ballads, with the music of Stephen Foster the most prominent.

When the Civil war broke out in April, 1861, the country was primed and ready for a musical explosion of patriotism and emotional expression. Publishers poured out an amazing variety of war music beginning with George F. Root's The First Gun is Fired, published only three days after the bombardment of Fort Sumter. From that day, countless songs on many subjects were published daily over the next four years.

'It's snow time'
While it might seem like your neighborhood is the last to be cleared, making the streets safe is harder than it looks. Crews divide an area into different sections and then set out, prioritizing first main streets, then important secondary streets that lead into and out of subdivisions. Cul-de-sacs are often hit last and, in residential areas, parked cars are a problem.
