Game of the week: Peotone (7-1) at Herscher (8-0)
Peotone on offense: The Blue Devils' powerhouse running attack was clicking on all cylinders in Week 8 as the area's leading rusher Chandler Gartner stacked up well over 200 yards to lead the way. Dillon Buege is also approaching 1,000 yards on the season, who along with Ryan Brewer, gives Peotone three viable ball carries. If given their druthers Peotone would almost exclusively run the football. Peotone has thrown the ball in a limited capacity and when they do so, Jack O'Boyle has shown himself capable of making a big play or two. Peotone's offense has scored 40 of its 43 touchdowns this season on the ground.

With more than 20 managers and 150 actors, Zombie Army Productions constructs and operates the sets. The level of detail is one of the many reasons Statesville has been going strong for over two decades. I won't spoil too many of the scares, but Statesville sets a perfect tone in the first room, when the actor playing the prison's demonic warden flies past the crowd from his perch on an overhead platform. There were a few rooms with music and strobe lights that were too intense; the effects were impressive.

As a shooting victim laid in a local hospital in grave condition and on life support today, local law enforcement is encountering difficulty obtaining details of what exactly happened.

The reluctance witnesses have shown toward coming forward is not a new problem for police, but frustration regarding it grows, and it was apparent at a news conference called Wednesday afternoon at Kankakee City Hall.

Breast cancer doesn't slow District 111 secretary
Vicki Scott knew she had breast cancer after a team of six doctors walked in for her mammogram and ultrasound, asking if she had any questions. A phone call from her doctor the next day only confirmed her suspicion on Sept. 25, 2015. That lump she found was cancer.

"Nobody wants to hear the 'C' word," said the 64-year-old superintendent's administrative assistant at Kankakee School District 111. "At the time, my mother was turning 89 years old. She wanted to cancel her birthday and her birthday dinner. She cried and said, 'It should have been me.' One of my daughters also was eight months pregnant, so I had to be strong."

Tensions mount over Pembroke fire flap
Tensions are high in Pembroke Township regarding a debate concerning the local fire protection district. A lawsuit filed in July pits the Board of Trustees of the Pembroke Fire Protection District against the Board of Trustees of Pembroke Township, Fire Chief Mark Baines and Deputy Fire Chief John Sokol.

Now, Baines says he can't readily access his equipment, putting the community at risk, while two PFPD members say they're being pushed out of their rightful positions. Judge Ron Gerts will hear the suit this morning, settling an almost yearlong argument.
